Q1: What is the difference between rhetoric and a rhetorical situation?
Q2: What are the three main purposes for composing? Briefly explain each one.

    1. 1) According to the book, rhetoric “refers to the ability to communicate effectively and with a purpose” and a rhetorical situation is “the context in which you create a composition.” When you write you should have a purpose in doing so and an audience to go along with it. Some things you need to know are that you do want to be able to know your audience’s expectations and serve them, as well as knowing what you are going to say.

      2) The three main purposes for composing are to present a narrative or to tell a story, to inform, and to persuade. To present a narrative/story, you have to show the audience what you are going to write about with a background. Without a story or narrative, you are not really composing anything? You need to grab the reader’s attention with that story or narrative. To inform something is to tell the reader what you are trying to say with your writing. It is not convincing the reader anything, but just letting them know what is going on. To persuade is to explain the reader your ideas and thoughts and show them why you think your idea is so fantastic. Providing supporting statistics will help with persuasion. Note that not everyone will agree with you, causing you to have more than one audience.

    1. I think ethos is the most effective rhetorical appeal because it shows that the author is credible and makes the viewer or reader believe the information given to them.

    2. My favorite type of mode is visual. Visual is the most entertaining for me and it can be very entertaining. Watching something in front of me gives me more motivation to watch and comprehend whets actually happening compared to written text. You can transfer books into movies and that allows people to watch the movie without having to read the book in most cases. You can add special effects in visuals unlike the other types of modes which gives the audience a more entertaining visual.

    3. 1. I think that logos is the most effective method of rhetorical appeal because its based on research and evidence. Ethos and pathos both allow for there to be bias. However, logos is purely based off of facts which gives the reader reliable information to be persuaded or informed. Because of this, the reliability of logos is hard to argue about.

      2. My favorite type of mode is also visual. Personally, I learn and retain information the best by visualizing objects. I also enjoy films, movies, theatre, all which have to do with visuals. There is an immense difference between reading or hearing something and visually being emerged in something. It gives a special touch to what i'm looking at.

    4. 1. There are three different types of rhetorical appeals. Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. Pathos is one type of rhetoric technique where the author makes an appeal to the emotional side of the audience. The author uses emotions and feelings within the audience to get a certain message portrayed. Logos is another rhetoric technique where the author simply states facts and other information such as statistics. This is used in order to create logical situations that people can relate to, thus influencing the audience to believe whatever message being depicted. Lastly, and what I believe is the most effective rhetoric appeal, is ethos. I believe Ethos is most effective because it shows that the author is credible and makes the viewer or reader believe the information given to them because it was done so by a reliable source. It sheds a good light on the authors character and makes them trustworthy.

    5. 1. I think that pathos is the most affective method because Its goal is to create a favorable emotional affection of the audience towards the objective of the speech. Also, when the audience shows more emotion, the more engaged they get.
      2. My favorite mode is visual. This is because I am a visual learner. I love watching videos and movies in class because it gives me a better opprotunity to understand the main goal of the lesson. Sometimes when I hear things in class, it goes in one ear and out the other.

    6. 1.I believe that logos is the most effective rhetorical appeal. Out of all three of the rhetorical appeals, logos stands out because it makes a logical connection of facts to the point being made in the text. Instead of appealing to emotion and ethics like pathos and ethos do respectively, logos is the use of facts and evidence to try and persuade the viewer of the author’s position. To me, using true facts and real evidence convince me the most because I cannot deny the truth to logical facts and evidence.

2.My favorite type of mode is visual. Watching something really helps me learn more effectively and faster. For example, if I didn’t know how to cook a certain meal, I would kook up how to cook it on YouTube and watch a video instead of reading a manual or listening to an audio of the directions to cook the meal.

      - Andrew Dorsey

    7. 1) The rhetorical appeal I think is most effective would be pathos. Pathos is what appeals to the audience's emotions and values, which is what I think makes the audience want to keep reading. If the author appeals to the emotions and values of the audience they have something to connect with and relate to. Pathos also helps to form a solid argument because when it appeals to the audience’s emotions, therefore it draws them in and helps them connect with the argument.

      2) There are three modes: writer or text-based, visual, and audio. My favorite mode is visual. I like learning hands on because it helps me grasp a better understanding of the lesson we are learning. It is easier to remember what I see rather than what I hear. I struggle with remembering verbal instructions and sometimes tune out when trying to listen.

    8. 1. I believe that the effectiveness of any rhetorical appeal is based on what you are composing. If you are writing a research paper, Logos, would be the most effective due to its effectiveness on gathering factual points. While you can use pathos and ethos to effectively draw in a different kind of audience. But, i personally believe that pathos is the most effective rhetorical appeal. Pathos is the most effective due to its appeal to emotion, this tends to draw more people in.
      2. My favorite type of mode has to be visual. I tend to get lost in writing and lose attention pretty quickly. But, with visuals I am able to retain that information longer and are able to understand it better. This is why I lean to watch more documentaries and films to enrich my understanding of cultures than just reading about it. I also read but watching videos and films are way more effective for me.

    9. I believe the most effective rhetorical appeal is pathos. The most important thing when writing in my opinion is to appeal to the reader and pathos is a rhetorical appeal where you try to appeal to the emotions of the audience. If the audience is engaged and you appeal to their emotions, they will be more interested in the writing.

My favorite type of mode is visual. As others said, I lose interest and lack focus when it comes to reading. However, when watching a movie or show I can watch without distraction and follow the whole story and not be lost of confused at any point.

    10. 1. I think that pathos is the most effect rhetorical appeal. This is because it directly deals with your audience's emotions and values. It helps keep the audience engaged which is very important when writing. Pathos is very useful getting your audience to feel connected to your writing and makes them want to keep reading it.

      2. My favorite type of mode is visual mostly because it helps keep me engaged and interested. With a text-based or audio mode I have a hard time staying focused because there usually isn't something that grabs my attention. This leads me to not understand material. The best way for me to stay engaged and understand material is through a visual mode.

    1. Using film as my main genre, there are vast amounts of genres and sub-genres withing the film category, practically endless. The three types of genres I focus on the most though is Science Fiction, Comedy, and Action. My favorite genre is a tough one though, but I think that it would have to reflect the genre of my favorite movie, Logan. Logan can be put into many genres, it is an action, comedy, adventure, thriller, drama, superhero, science fiction and more. According to my logic then my favorite genre would have to be all of these genre's combined. That is the amazing part of this movie, it provides so many different experiences all in one film. I believe that it is almost impossible to choose a single favorite genre as in today's society everything has been done before, so to create new and intriguing experiences for the audience people must mix and mash together already used but still relevant genres.

    2. 1a. There are many different types of genres. A genre is defined as a composition’s kind, category, or sort. They allow us to categorize and describe different types of compositions. My favorite type of genre is within the category of movies, due to the fact that movies consist of so many different genres. They range from comedy, to drama, to horror. Three different types of movie genres could be science fiction, action, or thriller. Although many genres overlap within the same movie, and create crazy experiences within the story, all genres are very different in their own ways and are easily distinguishable when presented in the movie. Personally, my favorite type of movie genre is romantic comedy. One movie that portrays this genre is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. The movie is all about love yet still allows the audience to laugh. I love when I am able to laugh at a movie, as it makes my day better.

    3. 1. In the world of literature and media there are several different genres. Three main genres that come to mind are comedy, horror, and thriller. Out of these three genres, my favorite is thriller because it keeps the reader or watcher, depending on how they are reading or watching, intrigued throughout.
      2. Style is so important in order to portray whatever message the author wants to get across because what style they use is dependent on what they are speaking about. If they are writing seriously, they will use a serious style. The topic and style must match to be effective.

    1. I believe that the rhetorical devices are necessary for writings that are meant to attract and educate an audience. Without these techniques, it would be very hard for an audience to either agree with one's writing or even just enjoy what you have to say. I believe that these techniques allow the reader to create a unique connection some of the writings. Through this bond that the writer created, they can connect with hundreds one people that they have never even met. These devices have been used for hundreds of year and with good reason.

I do believe that one should keep an open mind when it comes to choosing a genre to write about due to the fact that it may be harder for one to appeal to certain audiences with the specific genre that you have chosen. Some genres may convey your information in a much more efficient way that some others would.

  12. 1. Which rhetorical appeal do you believe is the most effective for communicating with a large audience (ethos, logos, or pathos). Why?

    2. What do you believe is the best mode of advertisement when appealing to young adults?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. I think that it really depends on the situation and what you are trying to achieve when communicating with a large audience, and that should help you decide which rhetorical appeal to use. For example, if you are trying to persuade an audience pathos would be best suited for this situation. Ethos and logos would help more when presenting a topic beyond your expertise, or when conducting a study/argument in front of a large audience.

      2. The best mode of advertisement when appealing to young adults would definitely be anything digital or visual. Since that age group uses computers and mobile devices all the time, this would increase the chances of them being exposed to the advertisement. Ads on social media sites like Twitter or Facebook would be good places for companies to target young adults. Snapchat is another great place for companies to put ads, and it seems is becoming a popular choice for many companies.

    2. 1. I believe that the most effective rhetorical appeal for a large audience, largely differs with the type of audience you are seeking out. When reaching out to an audience, let’s say, a science community then you would use logos. When talking to an audience about how smoking is bad for the human body then you would use both ethos and logos. Ethos would be used to spark an emotional response and logos would give logistics and reason.
2.a. From my own experience, I believe that the best mode of advertisement is ad in videos or on websites. An example would be the ads that run before and during a Youtube video. These videos are very effective because my attention is in this video and there is no point to really look away for 15 or 30 seconds, so that makes these ads very effective. Ads on websites are also effective because they usually relate to whatever you’re looking in this website.

    3. 1. I believe the most effective rhetorical appeal for a large audience is pathos because it evokes an emotional response. When a writer appeals to their audience's emotions they can create a connection, and although it is a large audience, it can feel personal. Ethos is the first runner up in my opinion because it gives the writer credibility. If a writer aims to successfully capture their audience and be deemed credible, they must use ethos. Logos appeals to one's logic and reasoning, but I believe that with a large audience you cannot appeal to everyone’s methods of reasoning or common sense. Therefore, connecting to a large audience through their emotions is the most effective strategy.
      2. I think the visual mode of advertising is best for young adults because it’s a simple and easily engaging method. Personally, when I see ads that contain visuals such as digital animations and a variety colors it captures my eye almost immediately. Also, I believe young adults prefer viewing advertisements digitally rather than reading something tangible.

  13. 1. Out of the three medias in the book, which media do you recommend and why?
    2. How are the three different rhetorical appeals helpful to persuading the audience?

    Sydney Denkert

    1. 1.) Out of the three medias in the book the one I would recommend would be digital. I feel like in this day and age a lot of things are done over the phone or computer using the internet. For instance, you can use snapchat now to read different news articles. Cosmopolitan which is a very popular magazine posts daily articles on snapchat that can be read for free. Also, the use of Instagram to display digital images of things going on in people’s daily lives. Instagram makes it easy to display media to your friends and family all over the world.

2.) The three-different rhetorical appeals ethos, logos, and pathos, are all used to persuade the audience. Ethos uses information from reliable sources to set a serious tone. Pathos draws in the readers emotional side; the author can tell a sad story with great detail to touch the audience. Logos uses different strategies to try to persuade the audience. All of the rhetorical appeals can be used in different ways to draw in the audience and set the tone.

    2. 1. A print is a type of mode I prefer to read a book from. Yes, it may be old-fashioned, but there is nothing like curling up in a comfy chair and folding pages along the spine of the book. However, digital is more convenient and what most students use during college. Audio would be a meaningful mode to people who learn through hearing. It would be interesting to compare the three modes to find which would allow a faster reading pace or a faster time for completion.

      2. When persuading an audience, all three different types of rhetorical appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos, are important. Ethos deals with the credibility, authority, and trustworthiness that the author portrays. Logos is how the information and facts ties into the point the author is trying to write about or the relevance of information. Finally, the author needs pathos which is the appeal to an audience's emotions or why the audience should care about what they are reading. Without these three rhetorical appeals, the audience would not be reading a piece of persuasion.

    1. 1. The three main purposes for composing are to present a narrative (or tell a story), to inform, or to persuade. This will change depending on the topic you are writing about, however it can be a combination of the three of these. It just depends on what you are trying to get across to your audience.
      2. Ethos is an author's credibility and it's important so your audience can learn to trust and listen to what you're saying. For example, if a marine biologist writes a paper on the Civil War, and then a historian comes out and writes a paper disproving what the biologist had written about, I would be more inclined to listen to the historian. The historian has more professional experience, and it is their job to know about it. Ethos can affect whether or not you can make a compelling argument or not, and if your audience will believe you.

    1) Is it necessary to use all three rhetorical appeals in a writing? Why or why not?
    2) In a fictional movie, are ethos and logos used as rhetorical appeals? If so give an example.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) I would say that it depends on what you're writing about if the three rhetorical appeals are necessary. As we know, ethos is the credibility/authority/trustworthiness the writer conveys to the audience. Pathos appeals to the emotions of the audience. Logos is the evidence, facts, the logic to the information that you provide in the writings. Let's say J. K. Rowling publishes a new Harry Potter book, the ethos is that you like J. K. Rowling and her previous books so you already have a good feeling about how the book will be. Logos wouldn't be as important because it is a fictional book with really no real facts.
      2) In a fictional movie, I would say ethos is used but not so much as logos. Ethos pertains to the director and how credible his audiences see him. For example, George Lucas created the base of the Star Wars franchise, started with the original trilogy in 1977 with "A New Hope" to the three prequel movies starting in 1999 with "A Phantom Menace." The credibility of George Lucas and how good of a director he was with the first three films led him to create three more and those still be as popular as the original three. People went to see the newer movies almost two decades after the originals partly because George Lucas created/directed them.

    1. 1. There are three rhetorical appeals to use when writing. The three appeals are called ethos, pathos, and logos. Essentially, these are elements that can help an author persuade an audience.

Ethos: Refers to the rhetorical element that appeals to ethics. This mode of persuasion is extremely important because it allows the author to show their audience whether he\she is credible or not. An example of ethos would be "Doctors from around the globe would recommend this medicine."

Pathos: Is the persuasive element that uses a strong appeal to emotion. The author makes an attempt to write something and get a powerful emotion from the audience. An example of pathos would be "You will never be satisfied in life if you don’t take advantage of this opportunity."

Logos: The rhetorical element that appeals to the sense of logic. By using logic, the author attempts to persuade the audience through the use of reasoning. An example of using logos would be "The statistics are perfectly clear, this investment has consistently turned a profit year-after-year".

      2. When I am writing, I try to find the most similarities possible that relate me to my audiences. This allows me to get my point across in a much more efficient manner. I use more or less advanced vocabulary depending on the education level of my readers. For example, I would use simple words when writing to children in elementary school but I would use a more enhanced word choice when trying to reach college graduates.

    1. 1. When beginning a piece, I do take into account who will be reading my work and how I can structure my writing with a suitable style such as tone or voice. All writing is autobiographical, in a sense, and by considering who my audience will be I am able to tailor my work to capture and hold the interest of others.

      2. The effectiveness of the rhetorical appeals definitely do differ across genres. For example, a personal blog could convey a casual or humorous style and based on the language or word choice in the writing, the writer can heavily rely on pathos to appeal to the emotion and connect to his or her audience. In a news article, however, the use of pathos may not be the best choice or prove to be evident in the article since a typical news article would mostly contain raw facts and information to be presented in an unbiased manner towards its readers.

    1. 1. It is appropriate when your purpose is to tell a story, report information, or persuade... anything to get your audience on board. As a person who writes, you get to choose which appeals to use. This all depends on your audience and purposes.

      2. An example of ethos would be in the book the crucible. There is a power of persuasion throughout the book. An example of pathos would be like “If we do not leave this place soon, we will end up yelling for help. We do not see anyone to help us here. So, leave this place and live” – the statement evokes emotions of fear. For logos, in many films a character is trying to get another character to believe their argument. They are relying on logos through the different elements of the arguments you're analyzing.
